Debra McDonald is among good company as far as her artistic lineage goes. She is the granddaughter of the late Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi a world renowned artist who was a Pintubi man from Lake MacDonald in the Gibson Desert, Central Australia. In 1948 he moved to Haasts Bluff and then to Papunya, where Debra was born. She still has a strong connection with the country around Hassts Bluff as well as the Lake MacDonald area.
Her mother is Martha McDonald Napaltjarri who has seen her own profile rise in the last few years. Martha paints primarily for Papunya Tjupi Art Centre. Martha’s sister, Lynda Syddick Napaltjarri is among the most successful of female Aboriginal Artists. It is little wonder that Debra’s artworks are sought after having been influenced by so many top artists from her family. Debra’s husband is the son of the female artist Mitjili Napurulla.
