Anna Price Pitjara
My Country

145cm x 114cm
APR019

Born at Atneltyeye (Boundary Bore, Utopia) in the mid 60’s, Anna Price Pitjara has spent much of her life surrounded by some of the most recognisable artists of the Utopia region. Her mother was Glory Ngale and she is related to several of the biggest artists of the region, including Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Minnie Pwerle, Barbara Weir and Gloria Petyarre. Watching some of these artists working in Batik and Acrylic from a young age has ensured that her natural talent for painting her traditional stories has evolved into the modern, minimalistic style of work we see today.

My Country is Anna’s delicate and minimal depiction of the dry riverbeds, ceremony sites, water soakage and salt lakes of her country. The women gather here to perform ceremony. They create a large ceremonial area using materials from the country around them. Ochre is collected and used to create body paint which is applied to the face, shoulders, upper body and legs, depending on the ceremony being performed. Anna often incorporates these body paint designs in her artistic practice.
