Walter Brown Tjangala
Walter Jangala Brown is a talented artist who currently lives in Nyirripi, a small community to the west of Yuendumu in the Tanami Desert, north of Alice Springs. Walter was born at Yuendumu in 1977 and is the nephew of Ronnie Tjampitjinpa. Ronnie is one of the founding members of Papunya Tula Artist Group and has been actively painting for over 45 years. Walter grew up surrounded by the artistic members of his family and has been taught the stories of his land and shown how to depict them as he grew up.
He began painting for Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu in 2007. He paints his father’s Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming); Warna Jukurrpa (Snake Dreaming); and Yumari Jukurrpa (a collection of rocks located to the west of Kintore in the Gibson Desert). He also paints his grandfather’s Tingari Cycle. These dreamings relate directly to his land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it.
