Gracie Morton Pwerle (circa 1956 – 2024) was a distinguished contemporary Australian artist celebrated for her unique minimalist style and delicate dotting technique. Hailing from the Alyawarre language group, Gracie was born at Utopia Station, approximately 250 km north-east of Alice Springs, and spent much of her life at Mosquito Bore (Lyentye) with her husband and two children.

Growing up in a family with a rich artistic heritage, Gracie was the daughter of the esteemed artist Myrtle Petyarre, sister to Gloria Petyarre, and half-sister to the renowned Utopian artist Kathleen Petyarre. Her artistic journey began in the 1970s with the Utopia Women’s Batik Group, and she later transitioned to canvas painting in the late 1980s, where she truly found her distinctive voice.

Gracie’s artwork is renowned for its ethereal beauty and dynamic movement, achieved through her masterful use of subtle color shades and intricate dotting. Her signature theme, the “Bush Plum Dreaming” (Amwekety), depicts the bush plum, a fruit that grows on low shrubs, and reflects the seasonal changes through a series of captivating paintings. Her work often included ‘Awelye,’ the body paint designs used in ceremonies and rituals, deeply rooted in her cultural heritage.

As a senior traditional custodian for both the Altyerre (Dreaming) and the Amwekety (Bush Plum) Dreaming, Gracie bore the responsibility of preserving and passing on the customs and traditions associated with these Dreamings, a role entrusted to her by her father and aunt.

Gracie’s paintings have captivated audiences in galleries across Australia and around the globe, earning her acclaim for their delicate beauty and profound cultural significance. Her contribution to contemporary Indigenous Australian art remains a testament to her skill, dedication, and the timeless stories of her people.
