Kerry Madawyn McCarthy was born in August 1975 in Daly River, Northern Territory, Australia. She is a respected contemporary artist whose work reflects her Indigenous heritage and personal experiences. Growing up in Daly River, a place shaped by diverse cultural influences, had a strong impact on her artistic development.
From a young age, Kerry showed an interest in art. She spent many Sundays painting with her father on the back veranda, while her mother shared cultural stories that helped shape her understanding of identity and tradition. These early experiences laid the foundation for her creative path.
In 1994, Kerry began to pursue art more seriously. With support from her family and community, she enrolled at the Bachelor Institute of Advanced Education. There, she developed her technical skills and deepened her knowledge of Indigenous art and storytelling.
Spending time in Bulgul, her mother’s homeland, was a turning point in her career. The environment and cultural connection she found there became central themes in her work. Her paintings often feature elements such as bush foods, traditional fishing practices, and cultural items like dilly bags and goose eggs.
Kerry has received national recognition for her work. In 2024, her painting Syaw won the First Nations Art Award at the National Contemporary Art Prize. Her art has been featured in exhibitions and competitions across the country.
In addition to her individual work, Kerry is a founding member of the Bulgul Artists collective. She continues to collaborate with other artists, experiment with new techniques, and share her knowledge with others. Known for her down-to-earth nature, she values community and cultural exchange.
Kerry McCarthy’s work is a clear reflection of her background, her connection to Country, and her commitment to preserving and sharing her culture through art.
