Reg Pengarte was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), a region deeply embedded in Arrernte Country and cultural practice. His ancestral ties extend to the Roper River area of the Northern Territory, and this dual connection—between place and kin—forms the backbone of his artistic vision. Raised within a community where storytelling, hunting, and ceremonial knowledge were passed down through generations, Reg absorbed the rhythms of Country and the symbolic language of Dreaming from an early age.
Reg is best known for his use of rarrk, a fine cross-hatching technique traditionally associated with Arnhem Land artists. Though not native to Arrernte Country, Reg learned this style from his brother-in-law, the renowned artist Eddie Blitner Taiita. His adaptation of rarrk is both respectful and innovative, blending the intricate linework of northern traditions with the ecological and spiritual narratives of central Australia.
Rarrk designs in Reg’s work often evoke the x-ray style—a figurative approach that reveals the internal structures of animals, as if seen through spiritual vision. This style is historically found on cave walls, bark paintings, and ceremonial body art, and Reg’s canvas works carry forward that legacy with contemporary resonance.
Reg’s paintings are deeply narrative, often depicting animals central to both his personal life and ancestral memory. His subjects include:
Each work is a visual story: not just of the animal itself, but of its role in ceremony, sustenance, and Dreaming. Reg’s Bush Tucker Dreaming series, for example, explores the interconnectedness of food sources, hunting practices, and ecological stewardship. These paintings are layered with meaning—tracking paths, waterholes, and ancestral presence.
