This painting depicts Awelye (Body Paint) which is applied to the women’s body when ceremony is performed. The paint is made using ochre, charcoal or ash.
Ochre is collected by the women and ground into a fine powder. This is mixed with water or animal fat and applied to the women’s shoulders, breasts, legs, stomach and faces, depending on the ceremony being performed. The Indigenous People of Central Australia still perform the sacred and ancient rituals today.
